Private Adoptions

The Sequoia Humane Society (SHS) aims to help find permanent, loving homes for all adoptable animals. Due to space limitations, we cannot admit every animal looking for a new home into our shelter. We have therefore reserved a space on our website to help pet owners distribute information about animals they need to rehome. All cats and dogs posted for private adoption must be spayed/neutered. In order to post a private adoption, we need a statement granting SHS permission to post your contact information on our website and Facebook. We also suggest that you post fliers in vet offices, pet stores and around your neighborhood.
If you are looking to rehome a pet, please send an email to info@sequoiahumane.org, including:

The following animals are currently available for private adoption:

Name: Squeaky and Rosie
Breed: Mix Breed
Gender: Spayed Females
Contact: Charles Quinn (707) 672-9615

Letter to SHS:

We have recently received two dogs that we are trying to rehome. They belonged to an elderly friend of ours that recently passed away. There are 2 dogs, both female. They are both very sweet dogs, they unfortunately do not fit into our current lifestyle, so I would really like to find them a good home, hopefully together as they do seem bonded to each other.

Squeaky is an older dog maybe 8 to 10 years old. She is Spayed. She is the black and white one in the photo.

Rosie is younger, maybe 3 to 4 years old. Rosie is Spayed as well. She is the mostly all black one in the photo.

They are both house trained and do not potty in the house. They are very sweet dogs and are looking for their forever home.

Any help you could offer to get these dogs adopted would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Name: Ember Honey
Gender: Spayed Female
Age: 8 Years Old
Contact: Margaret & William Evans (707) 298-3947

Letter to SHS:

Medical conditions: Ear infections, skin irritation caused by allergies, dental deterioration due to age

Effects from medical conditions:

Ear infections: Requires ear cleanings frequently

Skin: Requires use of anti-fungal and flea/tick treatments

Teeth: Could use a cleaning but has shown no issues. We changed from harder treats though

Behavior: Ember is a loving girl, loud; like a normal shepherd. She has lived in a household with other dogs and cats before. She is kind of afraid of cats and will bark or growl to defend her food, but has never bitten anyone or anything. Her normal routine includes walks at noon and 5pm, biscuits afterwards, and random yard times through the day; normally between 7am and 10pm. She has never had accidents in the house. She is sort of trained (sit, down, roll over, paw, high five, stay…) but is a willful and smart dog that listens when she’s in the mood. She doesn’t hate baths but is not greatly pleased with them either. She submits to them and then leans to make it as hard as possible because… dog. She doesn’t chew up things in the house but will pick in garbage if it’s left about or uncovered in a can.

Reason for surrender: We simply cannot afford the continued maintenance costs for her ears and coat with our current income in the household. We don’t want her to be uncomfortable because we cannot afford her medications.

Letter to SHS:

This is Fate, We got him about 3-4 years ago, we rehomed him to a family friend back a year ago but he ended up back here after they had to move into an apartment that doesn’t allow dogs. Our main issue with him is that he doesnt do well with our larger livestock, which wasnt a problem at first but then It started to get worse.
The same thing with our cats. It wasnt a problem until we had to rehome him awhile back. He has attacked our goats and cats before and we have lost too many animals to keep him around. Its also unfair to him to be on a runner for the majority of the day we are gone for work or School. My parents are also getting older and its harder for them to manage while Im at school.
He is altered but is not up to date on shots. He gets along well with other dogs and is very high energy. He is a big fan of water and an estimate weight of 110? He is overweight a but we try to keep the weight off of him. His age is around 7 and he is more fond of Females but was very attached to the husband of the family he was with. He walks on leash for the most part and is okay with people touching him. But its a hassle to keep with his coat maintenance, He doesnt likes to stay still for very long.

Letter to SHS:

I have a two year-old male American pit mix. I believe part terrier as well. Very well. Mannered does well with cats, children and other dogs. I have had this dog for about six months. Someone kind of dumped him in my lap asked me to watch him he was never picked up. I have had him fix. He has his shots. I am unable to keep him. He’s a big dog. I am a 55-year-old woman. I have arthritis in my feet Hands and joints. He is strong and it’s difficult for me to walk him without having pain not to mention I’m in a one bedroom apartment, which is very small. This dog deserves a good home with people who will be able to play and run with him.

Letter to SHS:

My name is Chris Campbell and my cat’s name is Gizmo. Unfortunately I will need to be surrendering him as I am unable to properly care for him in the place I am currently staying. I have been having issues with him urinating and pooping outside his litter box. I have taken him to the vet to get him medication but it has not helped with the issue. He has been a lot calmer with the medication but still has issues with urinating outside his litter box. He is up to date on his shots as he was just in the vet office recently. He is just over 4 years old (DOB 04/25/2021) and weighs 11.2 lbs. I hope he is able to find him a good home with your help.

Name: Birdie
Breed: Great Pyrenees/Border Collie Mix
Gender: Spayed Female
Age: 5 Years Old

Letter to SHS:

Rehoming My Dog Birdie – Looking for the Right Home This is the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make as an adult. My dog Birdie has been with me since she was a puppy, and she’s now five years old. Her name comes from the white stripe on her chest that resembles a bird—fitting, since in ancient Egyptian mythology birds symbolized divine power, protection, and connection to the sky. Birdie has been all of that for me. She is a Great Pyrenees/Border Collie mix (her mom was all white, her dad a collie). From the start, Birdie has been a sensitive soul—nervous around humans, shy of sudden movements, and cautious until trust is built. But once she opens up, she’s sweet, affectionate, and playful. Birdie’s happiest outside, rain or shine, snow or sun. If she could choose, she’d sleep outdoors under the stars. She’s house trained and knows commands like sit, lay down, shake, speak. She loves swimming, running, and playing with her trusted dog friends. Because of her Pyrenees heritage, Birdie has a strong protective instinct. Over time, that instinct has turned into over-protection of me—barking and lunging at cars, strangers, and sometimes dogs she perceives as threats. With a confident, experienced handler who understands working breeds, she has the potential to thrive. She does best with structure, clear leadership, and space to roam. She is not aggressive by nature, but when she feels she needs to protect me, she steps into that role. Birdie has gotten along well with three male dogs and two female dogs she’s known since puppyhood. She loves playing with them, but she has also had some scuffles with unfamiliar female dogs—never anything serious or requiring medical care. I am heartbroken, but I know that I am not the dominant personality type Birdie needs. I want her to have a good life with someone who can provide the time, energy, confidence, and love she deserves—ideally someone with land and experience with protective breeds. Birdie is truly a big baby at heart—sweet as pie once she feels safe. She’s incredibly loyal, playful, and full of love. She just needs the right person who can give her a job, space, and leadership. If you’re interested in giving Birdie the life she deserves, please reach out to me by email. This decision comes from a place of deep love—I don’t want to give her up, but I want what’s best for her and for everyone’s safety. Much love, Natalie

Gender: Neutered Male
Age: 7 Years Old

Letter to SHS:

Clyde needs to be rehomed because of size restrictions in the mobile home park I live in. Clyde is a black lab, 7yrs old, male and neutered, his shots are all up to date as well. He is also house trained. He loves to fetch ball and loves to take walks. Clyde likes a lot of cuddles too. He is good with children, people and other dogs. It would be nice if he could have a fenced yard to play in. He knows basic commands. He also acts like a playful adult at times. Clyde thrives in a loving and calm environment (sometimes busy one as well). He is also a good and loyal dog to anyone who can love him as much as we do.

Letter to SHS:

I have 2 sweet brother boy cats that I cannot find homes for. Before we moved, the boy cats would poop outside of the litter box (even if the litter boxes were cleaned and at one point I even put 6 litter boxes next to each other and they would still poop outside of the litter box, they did pee in the litter boxes though). They do not spray and are very very sweet. They enjoy cuddling and Ozzy really likes being an outdoor cat, not so much Lloyd but we can’t have the poop issue in our new house. It was really unhygienic. I assume they did not like sharing a litter box. I feel so bad for not being able to keep them as indoor cats anymore especially with this current weather. They really are wonderful cats and are very adoptable. They are pretty bonded to each other but I think they would be ok to go to separate homes especially because the black cat likes to be outside way more than the orange cat.

Letter to SHS:

Hello. I have a cat that I adopted about a year ago half ago.  He’s a sweet boy. I named him Castiel.  He had surgery on his mouth removing all but the four canine teeth.  He keeps getting infections in his gums that cause him to drool and not be able to clean himself. The vet thinks it’s because of flea bites that recently have bitten rats.  I cannot stop them from happening as we live right next to a large field where rats hang out.   I recently have had a lot of money issues and can’t afford to keep him happy and healthy.  He’s about 4 years old at this point.  I have his original adoption paperwork.  He’s neutered and has had all his shots.

Age: 8 months old

Letter to SHS:

I’m looking to surrender Tony, he is an 8 month old smoke kitten who is very sweet, outgoing, and playful, but he is a bit too rambunctious for my cats. I found him in front of our apartment playing in the street, and got no response from his post on Paws Cause.

He is neutered, vaxxed for rabies and is negative for FeLV and FIV, and I can send his medical records from Critters without Litters upon request.

Name: Oliver & Theo
Breed: Oliver – Domestic Short Hair Tabby, Theo – Domestic Short Hair Black
Gender: Neutered Males
Age: 4 years old
Contact: Juli – julibennett69@gmail.com

Letter to SHS:

Oliver and Theo are two neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped rescue cats about 4 years old. They are scared of dogs and shy/timid of strangers but not aggressive. I think they could eventually get along with other cats that are neutered. They probably wouldn’t be fun for young children, as they are shy and frightened of new people at first. Once they get to know you, they are very affectionate and loving. They both have had vet appointments with Arcata Animal Hospital and Sunnybrae, full vet records with recent annual exams, and fully vaccinated with no health issues for either one.

I would love to try to find a home where both of them could be together, but it is not the most important thing. Each one could be adopted individually or fostered individually. Oliver is the tabby and Theo is the black cat. Theo is more frightened of new people and will take a little longer to get to know you and trust you. They will need to be inside for a few months until they know you are their new person before you can let them out. They are used to being indoor and outdoor cats. I have Apple tag collars for them so you can monitor them with GPS if you have an iPhone.

I desperately need help with Oliver and Theo. I am wheelchair bound and cannot care for them. People offer to come over and scoop their litter and feed them, but that’s not the problem. There used to me letting them out in the morning at 5:00 a.m., so they’re yowling and crying every morning at 5:00 a.m. for me to let them outside because they don’t understand why they can’t be let outside. I can’t sleep. They’re all so running all over the house and jumping on the bed at night and they cannot at any time bump into my fixation device because it’s holding my bones together from the outside. I also cannot get a cat scratch or I cannot get any infection because I’ve lost 70% of the skin on my foot – both my surgeon and my doctor say I need to get the cats out of my home to reduce my risk of infection. I desperately need help with my cats, more than anything else right now.

Please give me a call if you have any questions at all. I need to find these sweet boys a place to go at least for 1 month, potentially longer. Whatever you are able to do, I will compensate you financially for. Thank you for your consideration.

Letter to SHS:

Meet this sweet 10-year-old Chihuahua who is searching for her forever home. She is a loving lap dog who enjoys cuddling, soft blankets, and spending time watching the world from the front window. She is potty trained, spayed, and up to date on all vaccinations. True to her breed, she can be vocal at times. She does best in a cat-free home. In a safe, familiar environment, she is relaxed, well-mannered, and affectionate. This gentle senior would thrive in a calm home where she can enjoy comfort, companionship, and plenty of love.

Name: Bruce & Cali
Breed: Domestic Short Hair
Gender: Neutered Male & Spayed Female
Age: 6 months old
Contact: Terra

Letter to SHS:

Bruce as you can see is very handsome and like all men knows it. When you call him he will come to you and if you tell him you would like a kiss will put his face next to yours. Bruce loves to play with toys and Lazer lights he has taken lessons from Superman he is faster than a speeding bullet If given the chance he will be your HERO. Bruce will be getting his rabies vaccine and distemper test on 2/5/26.
Facts about Bruce:
He’s around 6 months old
Call him he’ll come running
He will head but you for kisses
Follow you to the bathroom and sit in your lap while you pee
He likes to sleep under the covers
Gets along with other cats
Uses the litter box

Cali is an exceptionally bright and smart girl. She’s a little shy and timid at first but once she chooses her person she bonds with them quickly. She likes getting her back scratches and then working your way up to her head funny little order but that’s her order of pets. Cali does really well with special needs children which is exceptional since she has not had much exposure to children. She’s at my Foster’s who has a special needs son and she will sit there and lick his toes and growl at his mom if she comes too close. Seems like she would do best with either children or an older person as she chooses them as her faithful companions. Call loves to sleep in the bed with her human she will come running as soon as she hears the canned food being open. She’s just loving as she is beautiful. Cali is around 6months old and she’s been spayed, dewormed, flea treatment and had rabies vaccine.

Name: Buddy
Breed: Husky, Retriever & Lab, 60#
Gender: Neutered Male
Age: 2.5 years old
Contact: Nancy 707-840-9311

Letter to SHS:

Buddy is 2.5 years old, a 60 lb male mix of husky, retriever and lab. He is golden colored. He was originally found in the Hoopa area running along the road and was taken to the HCHumane Society in McKinleyville, where we adopted him. We are his only owners. He has no issues, gets along with children and cats (we have 2) and is typically okay around other dogs, usually submissive. He loves to cuddle on the couch. He has been to doggy day care but does not enjoy it so we stopped. He’s done with the chewing shoes stage, digging stage, but still likes to bury his bones. He is used to a backyard area to roll and lay in the sun. Loves to chew on bones, play with toys, chase balls. Not a barker. Follows orders, is house trained, cage trained, fixed and microchipped. The main/only issue is leash walking and energy level, he can be needy but is still a puppy. He tugs and makes it very difficult for my son to walk. He is completely up to date on all shots, licensing, exams, Bravecto and has never been sick.
