As a no-kill shelter, the Sequoia Humane Society can only take in as many animals as we currently have space for, and animals that will be a good fit for our shelter environment. We accept owner-surrendered animals with proof of ownership. By law, all lost or stray animals must go to the city or county impound facility.
To begin the surrender process for your pet, please call (707) 442-1782 or email info@sequoiahumane.org, to complete a Surrender Application. If there is no available space in the shelter or in foster, your pet may be placed our Intake Waiting List. Once space becomes available, we will contact you to schedule an intake appointment to complete a temperament and health evaluation.
There is a suggested surrender fee — $75 for cats and $100 for dogs — to assist with the care of your pet while they await their future home. If animal is not spayed or neutered the surrender fee may increase. All pets will be required to complete a temperament and health screening prior to acceptance into the adoption program.
We ask that surrendering owners pay $25 testing fee or produce negative test results for the following:* **
Cats over 6 months: feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus
Dogs: heartworm testing and/or parvovirus testing AS NEEDED
*If you are able to provide proof of a negative test result or protection through vaccination from a veterinarian dated within the past 30 days, testing may be required.
**Fee waiver is available
If there is no space in the shelter or your pet is not a good fit for the shelter environment, we may provide assistance with rehoming through our private adoptions webpage to help you re-home them directly. (All pets listed on our private adoptions must be spayed/neutered)
